How can I make sure the source I am using is accurate?
Here are some tips and tricks to help you make sure you are using an academic source.
What domain is the best to use? Try to use sources that come from a domain that is .gov. This is the most accurate way to find government based information. Can I use a website if it ends in a domain other than .gov? Of course! When using .com or .net make sure you are looking at sites that are verified. Try to stick to sources from major news networks; ABC, NBC, CBS, BBC, CNN, Fox, Al Jazeera, etc, and stay away from blog posts! Can I ever use a blog as a source? If you want and need a direct quote from the author, that is fine. However, a blog should never be used as an academic source. How can I avoid sources that have a bias? Easy! You can't. ALL sources have some level of bias. It is better to teach students about how to identify bias and not try to avoid it completely. |
